Toy Dogs Are Not a Toy
Pomeranian, or “toy dogs” has gained a great popularity in the recent years. This happened mainly because of a new trend among the celebrities: Sharon Osbourne, Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton Chihuahuas, Hilary Duff, Sandra Bullock and Jessica Alba own Pomeranians and Chihuahuas. Now it is fashionable to be the owner of this little dog, and the list of celebrity Chihuahuas and Poms is increasing. However, owning these breeds of the dog is a serious matter, and everything shown in the media must be treated with realistic approach.
Looking through the images and clips with celebrities we can notice one poignant thing. The Pomeranians are held by celebrities like pocketbooks or expensive accessories. They treat their dogs as if they are toys. Unfortunately, all this that media shows us leads to the fact that Pomeranians do not get proper care which they need to be healthy and feel good.
Owners of a Pomeranian must provide their pet with proper feeding and grooming as well as healthcare issues and training.
Grooming of Pomeranians is a very important matter. These little dog breeds are often called "Puffballs with feet". Although there are some other dogs requiring much more grooming, Poms must be brushed 2-3 times a week( and even more when shedding). The Poms coat is usually brushed when it is wet that is why it must be misted with water with a bit of conditioner. It’ s better to brush a Pomeranian with a bristle or a pin brush. In order to prevent it from getting matts, you should remove all loose hair. Otherwise, it will need clipping. The area behind ears must be brushed carefully because knots and tangles often appear in this place. In order to reduce shedding of a Pom, the overcoat must be lifted and the fluffy undercoat must be brushed.
The period when the Pom is shedding can be very confusing for its owner. That is why one should bear in mind some important things. A Pomeranian’s coat consists of a soft, thick and fluffy undercoat and a long and straight top coat. The age of 5-6 months is called “puppies uglies" because in this period Pomeranians are going through adolescence and by the age of 10 months they will have had a new coat. The first adult coat shedding usually happens at the age of one year. The shedding process of adult Pomeranians differ depending on whether it’s a male or a female dog.
For male Pomeranians over 18 months old the coat stays the same for the whole life. Females are affected by hormonal and seasonal factors. The shedding of female Pomeranians happens after delivering a litter ( usually there are 1 - 3 pups, seldom – 7). In 6 months her coat regrows. Stress may also influence Pomearanians and cause shedding. For both males and females given anesthetics, it will seriously affect their coat.
It is very important to provide a Pomeranian with activity. This toy dog needs short walks. If you are fond of long hikes, you should remember that this dog is too small and fragile to handle them. 1-3 short walks a day will be enough for a Pom. Play and exercise are also very important. This dog does not need much space for it. To maintain a good health of a Pomeranian you should let it play with the family and other pets. Besides, Poms enjoy playing with toy dogs. But they are said to get bored very easily that’ s why you should supply it with a great number of toys.
To conclude with, remember that Pomeranians are loving and caring creatures and must not be treated as a source of attention or an accessory. They really deserve your care because they are considered to be one of the most lovable dogs in the world.
